Late-book method

Volume 2, puzzle 79

For Volume 2 case 79, work from the instructions in your edition rather than a solution photo. The prompts below are conditional method checks and do not claim a particular cipher or suspect appears in this case.

Level 1: label the kind of constraint

On your case 79 page, identify ordinary evidence, any witness panel and any encoded material. The case number alone does not verify which of these appears; follow the instructions in your edition.

Level 2: resolve a code before making grid marks

If encoded material appears, keep its letter mapping separate from the grid. Check that the mapping is consistent throughout the message. Do not substitute a guessed word just because it would complete the grid.

Level 3: preserve a reversible trial

If the instructions require a liar test, start each trial from the same evidence-only grid. Invert only the selected statement, retain the others as true, and reject contradictions. Then apply the crime clue to the completed associations.

Keep evidence separate from deductions you made provisionally. If witness statements are present and the rules specify a liar, reverse one candidate's statement while keeping the others true. If a code appears, decode it before applying its meaning. Crossed-out clues on the website are progress marks, not proof of a lie.

Questions and answers

Is the answer online?

Treat forum grids as spoilers you did not ask this page to repeat. The book has a key.

Does Volume 2 change the rules?

Use the rules printed at the start of the case. A later case number alone does not tell you whether the case contains a liar or a code.
