Method only, no printed solution

Volume 1, puzzle 21

Case 21 is still within the first 25 Elementary cases in the UK preview. These checks distinguish a missed inference from a printing concern. They are general band-level help: the full case text has not been verified here, and no solution is provided.

Level 1: audit evidence, not the case number

Separate the direct clues from deductions written in your margin. Reapply only the direct evidence to a fresh grid and compare the first place it diverges from your earlier attempt.

Level 2: use the last-open-cell test

Within a pairwise grid, a row or column with all but one cell crossed forces its remaining match. A check excludes its other row and column cells. Repeat across all pairwise grids rather than making a guess from the story.

Level 3: verify edition before reporting an error

Write down your ISBN and the exact case heading. The official English correction we verified for Volume 1 concerns case 61, not 21. Other translations need their own publisher evidence; an online complaint is not a confirmed correction.

Volume 1 contains 100 puzzles. For case 21, keep three kinds of information separate: direct clues, deductions from those clues, and the crime clue that identifies the culprit after the associations are complete. Read your edition's instructions; do not infer a liar or a cipher from the case number alone.

  1. Copy the cast into a blank grid from the printables page.
  2. Mark checks and crosses the sentences state outright.
  3. Fill any row or column that has one blank.
  4. Do not open a solution photo. The back of your own book is the key if you own it.
