Decode, then deduce

Cryptograms and scrambled clues

An encoded clue needs a decoding step before it becomes grid evidence. Distinguish substitution from letter rearrangement, keep a consistent mapping and avoid searching for the plaintext of a numbered official case.

Two different toys show up in the books and on the site. A cryptogram keeps letter order and changes the alphabet. A scrambled clue (an anagram) keeps the letters and changes the order. If you treat one as the other, every word looks broken.

No. The method above is the hint. The plaintext of a numbered book puzzle is the book's own payoff.

Does Mini use codes?

Mini is the short grid. Codes show up in the crypt serial and in later book difficulties, not in every Mini.
